Gorilla trekking in Congo
The Kahuzi-Biega National Park is an exceptional habitat for the protection of the rainforest and the eastern lowland gorillas, in the Democratic Republic of Rwanda. Extending over 600,000 ha, are dense lowland rainforests as well as Afro-montane forests, with bamboo forests and some small areas of sub-alpine prairies and heather on Mounts Kahuzi and Biega. Kahuzi Biega is the second most visited park in the democratic Republic of Congo after the Virunga National Park. Gorilla trekking in Kahuzi Biega is the major activity that attracts a lot of tourists in the Park although other animals can be seen in the park including bush elephant, bush buffalo and around 136 other mammal’s species, 349 bird species, chimpanzee habituation at the Lwiro sanctuary. From 1980, the Kahuzi Biega National Park was inscribed into the UNESCO World heritage which gave the park attention and protection of its biodiversity.

The park is dominated by two mountains namely Kahuzi that stands at an altitude of 3,308 metersand Biega that stands at an altitude of 2790 meters high. This provides an opportunity to visitors to do the hiking of these mountains. Depending on your physical fitness you can opt to hike one of the mountains or combine the hike of the two mountains to have a complete experience.
Kahuzi Biega National Park can be accessed by air and road. You can choose to fly to Gome in East North of DR Congo and drive from Goma to Kahuzi Biega in East-South which takes a drive of 6 hours. You can also fly to Kigali in Rwanda and connect with a local flight to Kamembe and embark on a transfer for 2 hours to Kahuzi Biega Kamembe.
Gorilla trekking in Kahuzi Biega can be combined with chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe National Park and therefore after the trekking in Nyungwe you cross the border to Kahuzi Biega which takes only a two-hour drive.
